The Latest News at Dietz Bros Music! View this email in your browser
Check out what's happening this month at Dietz Brothers Music!

One of our teachers, Joseph Hylander, is working on making his own unique Telecaster. Check out his write up and pictures below!

Before Image:  The Squier Telecaster (Artic White) Joe bought used from Dietz Bros. Music with plans of refinishing and making a inexpensive guitar more unique and tweak it to sound and play better.  The Tele features two single-coil pickups, 3-way switching, a 21-fret Maple neck with fast-action fingerboards and die-cast tuners.

After Image:  Joe removed all  the original hardware and hand sanded the guitar down to its natural wood.  It's crafted from solid Agathis.

The Plan: The next step is to settle on a stain to color the guitar, add a Nitro finish and wet sand for a high gloss finish (all of which takes about two months’ time).  Joe recently picked out some Fender Original Vintage Telecaster pickups and some new tuning heads.  Our repair tech, Josh Brown, will be assembling and setting this guitar up as it gets further along.

Our Student of the month, Scott Hammond!

Scott Hammond has been a regular at Dietz Bros music and one of my best students since January of 2009.  He was recommended to me from my friend (Justin at Beach Brothers Tutoring) who said we would be a good match but to take his…quirks in stride.  However, since our first lesson together I’ve enjoyed teaching Scott guitar and we’ve become good friends.  Here is what some might describe as quirks but I say are some of my favorite fun facts about Scott:

1. He never hesitates to doubt me but will give everything I teach him a chance.  After nearly crushing his soul when I told him he’d been picking incorrectly he went home and practiced dozens of hours until he dominated it.
2. Scott has several guitars all of which he’s named.  Janine is his Fender American Stratocaster, Helen is his Gibson Les Paul Custom, Charlene is his Fender American Telecaster and Loretta is his Martin DC15ME.  While he tries to love them equally his favorite is Janine.
3. Scott probably practices more than I do.  He’s played solo in almost every open mic we’ve hosted along with a several other Dietz Bros regulars in a really good trio.  Come to the next open mic and you’ll see how he was born to sing Johnny Cash tunes.
4. Scott is one of the most generous people I know.  He has given me hours of his time to talk about proper nutrition, backpacking equipment and skills, exercise techniques and much more.
5. Scott is a personal trainer on the side and a big nutrition buff.   His 2:30am workout routine would blow your mind.

I’ve enjoyed all my time spent with Scott and I look forward to our next lesson.

We had an amazing turnout at the holiday canned food drive and open mic.  All of our customers really came through and helped us donate more than twice as many cans as we did last year!

The performers did a great job as well.  Joe Hylanders band, Dali's Rose, had their debut show with new members Josh Brown on guitar and Piper Redman on stand up bass.  Josh's main band, Gold Soundz, played a short set with some screaming solos.  Erich Johnsons jazz band played and sounded excellent.  All of our students did great and really showed some guts getting up there and playing in front of all those people.  There was a mean solo from Tim Parker, a great Johnny Cash impression by Scott Hammond, a much better rendition of "Pumped up Kicks" and "Wagon Wheel" sung and played by Lauren Bendig, and "B" played and sang Jeff Buckley's tune "Hallelujah" on the banjo.  By the way the cookie table was decimated, I would guess that everyone enjoyed the food as well.

We have another open mic coming up on March 8th.  There will be sign up sheets in the store and in both hallways.  Make sure to get your name in before it fills up!

Lastly, check out this article on Deering Banjos blog.  They address
what we ALL feel the first few dozen times we perform.  Don't let the fear of making a mistake or not sounding perfect get in your way of playing live!
